A few years ago while my wife Noel was leading the early childhood ministry at Lake City Church, she started a playgroup for moms.  Lake City Church had a number of young families, so this group addressed many needs: community, friendship, sanity, social development, and getting out of the house!  For our family (especially our two daughters), one of the toughest parts of leaving Lake City Church was saying goodbye to the playgroups.  Fast forward 18 months and this playgroup has made the local news!  Check it out.

The group decided to create a co-op where moms in the group can drop their kids off and get away for a few hours while a couple of moms stay at the church to watch the kids.  The local news program highlighted the program because it is a creative way to support families and save money during tough economic times.

Depending on your context, starting a playgroup can be a relatively easy way to support parents and build strong relationships in-between the weekends.  At Lake City, we found that the playgroups also helped shy kids adapt to the early childhood spaces so leaving them during services became less and less problematic.  The “Day Out” experiment takes this even further!  So cool…
